With many ancient and prehistoric sites situated around it such as a 6000-year-old settlement, the Kyle also provides a brilliant day of walking and an opportunity to discover more about our corner of the Northwest Highlands.

Varrich Castle

The namesake of our hotel restaurant, Varrich Castle sits overlooking the Kyle and our village. Now a tower house of ruins, the beautiful castle was once the seat of the well-known Clan MacKay and is full of over 1000 years of history. Climb up to the castle and experience the magical views for yourself, you can even step inside the ruins. It’s a must see when you come to stay!

Coastal Retreats

If you fancy a refreshing seaside walk or have brought your pup along for an invigorating run across the sands, there are some beautiful beaches to visit near Tongue.

Strathy bay is a remote sandy beach with magnificent hilly scenery. While it’s the perfect place for a walk, the beach is also a popular spot for surfing, as the cliffs to the east shelter the beach from the winter swells and strong winds. Or if you’re here for a springtime visit, you will be able to see the beauty of the wildflowers blooming along the hilltops.

Another hidden gem along the NC500 is Coldbackie Beach. With crystal clear blue waters, golden sands and crashing waves, you may even mistake this isolated beach for a Caribbean paradise!
